Small Scottish Dirk Knife with Celtic Knotwork

$1,278.75

The Dirk is a symbol of Scotland and its warrior spirit. The unique design of the dirk can be traced back to medieval "ballock" knives (really single-edged thrusting daggers) but were made longer, broader and gradually more and more of the grip was covered with carved interlacing knotwork. The steel of the blades was believed to be holy and sacred oaths were sworn upon them.

Though this particular dirk does not replicate any specific original it is of a type that would have been common in the early to mid 18th century and would have been just the sort to have been carried during the Jacobite Rebellion (1745-1747). The blade is hand forged W2 steel, the grip is local pear wood darkened with aqua fortis. The blade collar, pommel cap, sheath tip and sheath clevis are all sterling silver. The sheath itself is 5oz veg tan leather. Slainte!
