Medieval Flaring Face Hammer
Medieval Flaring Face Hammer
While flipping through an old issue of 'The Anvil's Ring' (March 1979) I came across an article by Dimitri Gerakaris about Medieval blacksmith's hammers the article noted that there are several original wood cuts illustrating blacksmiths at work and that the hammers depicted often have a face that is noticeably wider than the body of the hammer and that this allows the smith to tuck into tight areas, like when necking in a bar, use the edge of the face as a fuller, and deliver a blow that "packs a lot of wallop" due to the weight forward design.
My version is hand forged from 1045 steel and is hung on a choice hickory handle. I can report from personal experience that it does pack a punch and is a joy to use.
