Early American Felling Axe Made To Order

Early American Felling Axe Made To Order

from $650.00

This style of axe goes back to at least the 18th century. This version is made using the traditional ‘wrap and weld’ technique. The axehead is hand forged, from a heavy flat bar of mild steel, the cheeks of the eye are forged to shape and a few other details are roughed in. The axe body is then folded in half and forge-welded together to form the eye. The poll of the axe is jump welded on from 1045 steel. Next the edge bit (80CrV2) is inlaid into a cleft in the front of the axe and forge-welded in. The axe comes fully hardened, tempered and sharpened.

The head is about 6” from poll to edge. The edge is about 3” long. The straight helve is hand riven hickory and is about 20” from the top of the eye. It is finished with linseed oil. Weight is about 2lbs hung. A custom made sheath of hand sewn 8-9oz veg tanned leather is also available.

Made to order and may take 6-8 weeks to ship.
